Susan O’Brien is a filmmaker and writer who has directed and produced work that has screened at film festivals globally, MTV, the Smithsonian, online publications, and as global campaigns for Me Too International and Planned Parenthood. After receiving her BFA in Film & Television at the Savannah College of Art & Design she directed and produced feature length documentary and art exhibition, The Strangers Project, which premiered at the Big Apple Film Festival in NY. Susan then worked as an assistant to Academy Award nominated Writer & Director, John Sayles and as an assistant to Director, Jen Senko for post-production and distribution of her film, The Brainwashing of My Dad (Produced by Stranger Things' Matthew Modine). She later began working as an Art Director and designer collaborating with the industry’s leading production companies and studios in creating award-winning campaigns for brands such as Target, Apple, Facebook, Starbucks, MAC, and Ford and TV shows for Amazon, Netflix, NBC and AMC Networks. Susan was a fellow for the Atlanta Airport x Atlanta Film Festival's Airport Shorts program to create a film that will screen on all TVs at the Atlanta Airport for a year and is an alumni of the prestigious Tribeca and CHANEL’s THROUGH HER LENS workshop where she was mentored by Ry Russo-Young, Glenn Close, Emilia Clarke, Niki Caro and Mollye Asher. In 2021, her music documentary, RESIST: The Resistance Revival Chorus premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival where it then went on to screen at over 25 festivals nationally and won Programmers’ Choice at the Academy Award-Qualifying Pittsburgh Film Festival. Her next project, the experimental dance film, When We Arrive As Flowers was executive produced by actor and activist, Alexandra Billings (Transparent, Disclosure, and Never Have I Ever) and won Best Experimental Film from the Academy Award-Qualifying, Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival and Glass Ceiling Breakers. Susan’s most recent film, Personal Mythologies was funded by Soho House and premiered March 2024 at the acclaimed documentary festival True/False Film. She is one of the fellows for the 2024 RePRO Films and Peace is Loud’s film grant. Susan is currently in post-production for her narrative short film noir thriller, Collectors.

As a cinephile, she also strives to promote and encourage education on classic cinema; making videos on film history, classic stars and forgotten stories of Hollywood on her popular TikTok channel @callmeharlowe. 

Her mission is to make films, music videos and social content that amplify and celebrate voices of women and non-binary individuals, LGBTQIA+ communities and marginalized groups.
